Repair Your Plumbing? You Can Do That!

Not to long ago my water heater went out. Just like that you think all is well then whamo a small leak appears. I was faced with a decision, fix it myself or call the plumber. well after getting several estimates ranging from $1500 to $2500, I decided to do it myself.

It's really not that to hard to repair plumbing. In this article I will give you some pointers to help aid you in this endeavor. And hopefully spare you from the high cost of paying for a plumber. Nothing against plumbers but this project is doable.

Steps it will take:

1) As soon as you realize that the old water heater has to go start draining it. It can take several hours to drain. Remember to turn off the main water valve and open up all of the faucets to eliminate any pressure. if it's a gas unit make sure that you turn off the main gas line in the house and if it is electric turn off the breaker. Think safety first.

2) Try and purchase the same unit. This will prevent you from adding pipe and new valves.

3) Size up the job and disconnect the tank from the water pipes, gas line or the electrical connection. If it's gas you will need to disconnect the flue as well. Save all parts in order to match them up when you purchase your supplies.

4) You will need to have on hand plumbers tape, small gas torch, solder, flux, plumbing sandpaper, pipe cutter, gas tape (to seal gas line) and maybe some pipe glue. Ask the sales person at the hardware store for a more defined list.

Once you have disconnected the tank remove it from your work space. Do a thorough measurement of the remaining pipe for reference when you go to the hardware store. I will be honest with you, you might need to make a few trips back to the store. Once you get the new tank, slide it into place to line up the plumbing.

If you bought the same unit it should line right up, if you were unable, you will need to remove or add length to the existing piping. This may require you to splice together copper with plastic, don't let this scare you the hardware store will have all of the necessary parts.

If you need to add copper pipe make sure that you clean the old and new pipe by using sandpaper, inside and out. If it's not clean the solder will not flow into the joint. Another tip is to not over wrap the mail threaded pipe with tape, this can cause a leak. Twice around should be enough. Also, don't over tighten it.

This may sound complicated but trust me, if I can do it, anyone can. Just take it slow, ask questions from the hardware specialist and go online for more instructions. One last item, if you have a gas unit your county or city may require an inspection. The inspector will verify that the gas connection is right and that the angle of the flue is right. Don't take a chance with gas, make the call to have someone come out and inspect your work.

Your should be able to complete this job for $500 or so and the tools and supplies will be available for when your dishwasher goes out. Good luck.

Theory of the Kleshas: a Yogic Understanding of Human Suffering (and Liberation!)

One of the foundational texts of the Yoga Tradition is Patanjalis Yoga Sutras. It is here (among other places) that the Yogic understanding of the origins of human suffering (and Liberation) is offered in the form of what is know as the Theory of the Kleshas.

According to Patanjali, human suffering has its origin in Avidya (the first Klesa), the ignorance that arises when the soul in its descent into matter forgets its divine origin. This forgetting gives rise to the second Klesa, Asmita, or the identification of the soul with its vehicles (the various bodies, including the most dense, or physical, that we inhabit in our journey through manifestation). This false identification operates through the mechanism of the third and fourth Klesas, Raga and Dvesa, desire and fear. and it is here that we see the basic mechanism through which our bodyminds (our thoughts, words, & actions) operate dualistically . . . for desire/fear (Raga/Dvesa) is simply the most basic of the polarities, or sets of opposites, which define the terrain of human existence in its conditioned state. The fifth Klesa is Abhinivesha, or the desire (of the body/vehicle or ego) for its life, i.e. the desire to perpetuate, and fear of losing, its (illusory) existence. This fifth Klesa defines the basic obstacle to reversing this process (the necessary first step for entering the path to Liberation), namely the attachment we have to the life of the structure created by the various polarities, whose dissolution we experience as death.

So what, then, is the solution? How does one reverse this process, dissolve the polarities, re-member ones Svarupa, or True Nature and in the process activate a True Form, i.e. a set of vehicles enlivened by Virtues/Deities/geometries that grow out of and are nourished by the uninterrupted remembrance of their divine origin (by the radiant Core of our Being, whose yogic metaphor is the Shushumna Nadi)? Now Patanjali, of course, has an answer (which he lays out in the remainder of The Yoga Sutras ~ check it out!), as do countless other Saints, Sages and Teachers from various wisdom traditions.

The solution Ive chosen to work with, in my own practice, is a distillation of sorts, from the wellspring of these Eastern traditions, of a set of techniques designed specifically for the Western mind, based solidly in an understanding that it is in the resolution of opposites that one finds the key to beginning this journey homeward. These polarity processing techniques (a basic technique as well as variations on it designed specifically to address issues at the level of the physical and emotional bodies) were given by Spirit to Leslie Temple-Thurston, and are described in her book The Marriage Of Spirit. (Please see my previous post describing this method!) Within the realm of yoga asana, Richard Freeman is someone whose teaching method/philosophy is based at least in part upon a resolution of opposites: a practice which looks to marry opposing physical/energetic movements/patterns within the context of specific asanas and in so doing guide awareness continually back into the Shushumna Nadi, and from there allow asanas in their True Forms to express.

Choosing the Right Summer Wines

There are so many things that we associate with summer - lazing around the swimming pool, cooking outdoors, picnics by the lake, and of course some wonderfully refreshing wines. Anyone can drink beer or pack soda for a romantic picnic, but why settle for the "same old" when you can tickle your palate with something crisp, fruity, sweet, refreshing, and a perfect complement to your other summer fare? If you're trying to choose just the right summer wines, we can help. Here are some quick tips for you to remember.

Body

Of course you need to choose summer wines that are light in body. There is nothing worse on a warm summer day than being weighed down by a heavy drink of any variety. This doesn't necessarily mean just white wines. There are many light and crisp red wines that are fruity and sweet but not as heavy-bodied as you might expect. A white Zinfandel is a perfect choice, as it's both light and crisp, and perfectly refreshing for your lighter summer fare. Another choice may be a Muscadet from France; the taste is a bit fruity but very zesty and a perfect taste for summer days.

Your Menu Options

Some years ago, a woman who came into a certain Starbucks every day for a cappuccino decided on one hot summer day that there was nothing wrong with having her beverage over ice - and a tradition was born. One of the important things to remember about summer wines is that you don't need to be tied to stringent rules about which wines are served room temperature and which should be served chilled, and which what wine to serve with what food. If you're having burgers, which are of course red meat, there's no reason you can't have a refreshing white wine. A nice chilled glass of your favorite choice can actually be a wonderful palate cleanser when enjoying your favorite outdoor fare. And there's nothing wrong with having a red wine that's been chilled. You never know what tradition you're going to start.

Of course your choice will depend on your menu too. If you're opting for the typical lighter fare of fish and salad, then some red wines might be a bit too heavy, even if they are chilled. You might do well to stick with the lighter wines when your menu is a bit lighter as well.

special Wines

Summertime is the best time to try some special fruit wines that you might not have tried before. Many great wines are made with strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, bananas, apples, and of course a good combination of these. Serving these special or exotic wines chilled can be a perfect treat for a summer picnic or an afternoon relaxing by the pool or on the lake.

Many who make their own homemade wine find that summertime is perfect for opening those bottles of special fruit wine that they've been letting age for some time. summer wines are a great treat for lazy days and special occasions, and for when you're doing absolutely nothing at all.
