Cellular Phone Technology

Analog Service is similar to FM radio in that modulating radio signals carry information such as voice or data. The receiver and transmitter must be tuned to the same frequency within a small band width for the receiver to rebuild the signal, amplify it, and send it to the speaker. There are limitations on the number of channels that can be used making this technology soon to be outlived. Effective February 2008, many wireless providers will be discontinuing support of this service.

Digital Service is a method similar to computers, in that it uses binary code of Os and 1s. Most new wireless phones and networks use digital technology. The analog signal in Digital is converted into binary code and transmitted as a series of on and off transmissions. There are three digital wireless technologies, CDMA, TDMA and GSM and I will explain these three as phones that work with one may not work on another.

TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) was released in 1994; it uses the frequency bands available to the wireless network and divided them into time slots with each phone user having access to one time slot at regular intervals. In North America TDMA uses both 800 MHz and 1900 MHz bands. Most of the major wireless carriers use TDMA.

CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) technology dates back to the 1940s, when it was developed for military use because it was resistant to interference from enemy signals. Known as spread spectrum technology this technology was restricted to military use and top secret during World War 2. In the 1980s the commercial use of this technology was realized after a 1976 publication of Spread Spectrum Systems by Robert Dixon was published.

Previous publications were classified military reports or narrow subtopics on academic papers. By 1993 CDMA was accepted as a standard and went into operation in 1996. CDMA also exists at both the 800 MHz and 1900 MHz band, and is used by the major carriers.

GSM (Global system for Mobile Communications) is based upon an improved version of TDMA technology. In 1982, a conference in Europe created a digital standard to allow users to roam from country to country in Europe. By 1987, the GSM standard was created based upon both analog and TDMA digital technologies. Using wider 200 kHz channels instead of the 30 kHz channels TDMA used along with other modifications they were able to speed up the bit rate with a more natural sounding voice-compression algorithm.

This also enabled GSM to provide such other data services as email, fax, internet browsing, and internet/LAN wireless access. The GSM standard was accepted in the United States in 1995 and is the only phone that can be used around the world. This technology will be the bases of future growth in the wireless phone industry as it offers the multifunction capabilities todays users require.

Weight Loss and Fitness

The amount of calories you consume and the amount of energy you expand is directly related to weight loss or gain. Simple, right? Not really quite as simple as that. There are other factors that come into play that are not talked about too much.

If you go to any of the "diet" centers, many times they will focus on the food you eat and tell you to concentrate on that. You look at the commercials with Kirsty Ally and she talks about the great food and she's not starving or missing out on desserts, because the program has all that 'sinful' food. But the thing is, you aren't going to eat their food all the time or forever, so what's a girl to do? : )

The thing that happens is that you revert to your former eating habits and probably return to your original shape. Many people add to their original weight, at least a couple pounds. This is why there is a series of commercials using the expression stay an 'after' meaning don't return to your before weight.

The only way you can "stay an after" is if you change your lifestyle from your "before" lifestyle. Meaning you need to incorporate the eating habits and some sort of exercise program and MAINTAIN that. The exercise program tends to get overlooked, but that must be a part of your plan. It is a known fact that muscle burns more calories than fat, so if you have more muscle, you are using more calories, even if you are just sitting around watching TV. no extra effort needed, the muscle is helping to keep you in shape at all times.

When you just change your diet you tend to lose muscle. When you lose muscle, your body doesn't work at hard at burning calories. What goes on is you lose muscle and then you start eating like "before" and your body doesn't burn the calories like it used to, so you gain the weight back faster than before, and you don't add muscle, you add more fat; unless you are exercising.

Here's the next thing. The exercise that most people turn to is cardio (running, biking, walking, etc.) to burn the fat. But that doesn't add much muscle to your frame. The better option is to lift weights. This will burn calories and 'replace' fat with muscle, which will in turn burn more calories and get you started in the opposite direction of the fat burning operation. You will gain muscle and it will help burn calories and keep you in shape.

Lifting weights will not necessary make you lose weight, but you will look and feel better. Muscle is heavier than fat, but it is also more dense. You can keep the same weight and drop a few inches off your waist. Women don't worry, you don't have the testosterone to gain huge bulky muscles. You will keep a trim fit appearance and not turn into a 'muscle-y mannish' woman. That can't happen without some serious supplement help and probably steroids as well.

Before anyone writes me to defend the Jenny Craigs of the world, I am not putting down any healthy method of weight loss. If a center, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, whatever, can help you on the track to health and fitness that is terrific. They can provide excellent support groups and calorie counting methods and all that stuff. I am just saying that unless you incorporate a change in your lifestyle, you are likely to gain weight back. I know the "weight loss centers" all agree with that.

A Look At Your Car's Dashboard

Facia. This is what people in British English called your cars dashboard.

Your cars dashboard is actually that panel that you can find under your windscreen. If you are not so sure about what it is, then you would find your dashboard as that part of your vehicle where there are indicators and dials in it like the tachometer, speedometer, odometer, as well as the fuel gauge.

Since all the indicators and dials are found in your dashboard, it is important that you are familiar with it. You see, these indicators and dials tell you exactly about the measurements or other problems that your car might be experiencing. just keep in mind that these indicators and dials tell you how fast you are going or if there might be engine trouble or battery trouble or any other aspect of your driving and your cars status.

Now, if any of the lights on your dashboard are not working, it is important that you do check and look into it. You see, in cases when there might be a problem with your car, you would not be notified and alerted about it. This could mean you getting into trouble, getting stranded, or even getting your pocket emptied up until your very last cent.

To check, you should first look at your dashboard before you even put in your key into the ignition. Then, turn your key to the on position and not the start position. While you do this, do not take your eyes off the dashboard lights. You would know that they are working well because these should light up for around five seconds. Now, if you notice that any one of the lights on your dashboard is not working, then go have a mechanic or professional take a look at it.
